چکیده

Title of Document: A SYSTEMS ENGINEERING FRAMEWORK FOR METABOLIC ENGINEERING EXPERIMENTS Joseph Johnnie, Master of Science in Systems Engineering, 2011 Directed By: Dr. Mark Austin, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Institute for Systems Research, University of Maryland at College Park Cells of living organisms simultaneously operate hundreds or thousands of interconnected chemical reactions. Metabolic networks include these chemical reactions and compounds participating in them. Metabolic engineering is a science centered on the analysis and purposeful modification of an organism's metabolic network toward a beneficial purpose, such as production of fuel or medicinal compounds in microorganisms. Unfortunately, there are problems with the design and visualization of modified metabolic networks due to lack of standardized and fully developed visual modeling languages. The purposes of this paper are to propose a multilevel framework for the synthesis, analysis and design of metabolic systems, and then explore the extent to which abstractions from systems engineering (e.g., SysML) can complement and add value to the abstractions currently under development within the greater biological community (e.g., SBGN). The computational test-bed that accompanies this work is production of the anti-malarial drug artemisinin in genetically engineered Saccaharomyces cerevisiae (yeast). A statistical analysis framework for bus reliability evaluation based on AVL data: A case study of Qazvin, Iran

Reliability is a fundamental factor in the operation of bus transportation systems for the reason that it signifies a straight indicator of the quality of service and operator’s costs. Todays, the application of GPS technology in bus systems provides big data availability, though it brings the difficulties of data preprocessing in a methodical approach. In this study, the principal component an...

Parallel computation framework for optimizing trailer routes in bulk transportation

We consider a rich tanker trailer routing problem with stochastic transit times for chemicals and liquid bulk orders. A typical route of the tanker trailer comprises of sourcing a cleaned and prepped trailer from a pre-wash location, pickup and delivery of chemical orders, cleaning the tanker trailer at a post-wash location after order delivery and prepping for the next order. Unlike traditiona...

A Unique Mathematical Framework for Optimizing Patient Satisfaction in Emergency Departments

In healthcare systems, emergency departments (EDs) are the most vital elements, in that they provide critical and immediate healthcare services to the patients 24 hours a day. Patient satisfaction is a crucial concept and a practical tool for evaluating the performance of the EDs. This study presents a unique framework for the performance optimization of an emergency department in a big general...
